Everything You Need To Know About Chillies And Insomnia

If you had asked us out of the blue whether chillies would be the answer for insomnia, we have to admit we would have been doubtful.

However, in the recent (October, 2005) Australian Sleep Association Conference at Surfers Paradise in Queensland, Australia, researchers have shown improved sleep patterns from regular consumption of chillies.

According to Dr Andrews, from the University of Tasmania's School Of Human Life Sciences,

"What we found from our pilot study, which was essentially looking at the cardiovascular effect of eating chillies, was that it can improve day-time alertness, help people go to sleep more readily and help them wake up more easily.".

I believe this is intimately tied in with the increase in circulation and metabolism that we discuss in my fatigue page. Essentially, if we have chillies early in the morning (chilli powder taken in capsules if you can't face chilli-con-carne on your cereal) through increased alertness and metabolism your body is busier throughout the day. It is reasonable to then believe that your body is tireder at the end of the day and more prepared for sleep.

I'll endeavour to find more information on this subject as part of my regular research.

As with everything else we discuss under this Chillies & Your Health section, please consult with your medical advisor before using any sort of new treatment.
