chilli book review Curry: A Tale Of Cooks & Conquerors - My Review
chilli book review
Fragrant Rice. by Janet De Neefe
Classification: Culture + Recipes
Illustrated: Yes
Overall Rating : 9/10
I was lucky enough to attend one of Janet De Neefe's Balinese cooking classes in 1999, back when she ran them all herself, and I had the time of my life.
So I can say, from first-hand experience, that Janet, married to a Balinese businessman and having had four children with him, truly lives everyday in the Balinese culture and you will not find a Westerner with a greater knowledge of the culture or the cuisine. To take that further, her and her husband own and manage three top quality restaurants around Ubud.
The book itself is Janet going through and explaining how she came from Melbourne to be where she is now and the wide variety of aspects of Balinese culture and cuisine and her experiences within them.
There are well over 100 recipes scattered thoughout the book and a great deal of background knowledge to support you in re-creating them yourself - even if you have no previous experience with Asian cuisine.
A number of the recipes in there are standard fare in my household, particularly the Ayam Goreng recipe on page 85. I cannot recommend this book enough for anyone interested in SE Asian cuisine !
The overall rating would have been a 10 if it had been printed on better quality paper and in a larger format - neither of which is a reflection on the quality of Janet's effort, just her publisher.
